Christmas Meal 2002
The raffle at the Christmas meal raised just over £125 and on the night it was decided to divide the money between two charities - Child Line and Burnley Women's Aid.

Conservation Work Day
On Saturday 22nd February we will be holding another work day with Kathryn, the warden from Burrs Park.

Unfortunately on the last event there was virtually no help forthcoming from the village for either Kathryn or her two voluntary wardens and so not only was it quite soul destroying for our group, but it also meant that no progress could be made on such items as the new path.

Please do try to give the village some support even if it is only for half an hour or so. All the work that is being done is for the benefit of the village and therefore indirectly of benefit to its residents.

As usual, the day will start at 10:00 a.m. and finish at about 12:00 noon. The meeting points are the bus turnaround or the lower village car park.

Residents Association AGM
All residents of Nangreaves are automatically members of the Nangreaves Residents Association and as such are entitled to -

Attend the AGM.
Propose individuals for membership of the Committee.
Vote for individuals if there are more nominations than vacancies.
Vote for individuals for the positions of Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.
Raise any issue not already covered by the Agenda under "Any other business".

Letter from the Chief Planning Officer
In December of last year a letter was sent out by the Chief Planning Officer explaining the conservation status of the village and the restrictions that this imposes on work that could be done to the houses in the village. Some people have expressed concern that this letter may have only been sent to them individually, so it is important to point out that it was a general letter that was sent to every house in the village.

A new Conservation Officer has been appointed to Bury, and he is currently visiting all the conservation areas under his control.

Dog poo bags
If anyone needs any bags for the picking up of dog poo, the dog warden has left a supply which is currently being kept by Linda at no. 38. If you give her a call on 761 5414 she will drop some off for you (bags, that is!)

Email from Canada
We received this email recently from Canada - if anyone can help Jim with any information, please do get in touch with him.

Hello
My name is Jim Nangreaves from Prince Edward Island ,Canada .I have been doing searches on my surname for the past 6 months .It is refreshing to find a site like yours that is so well done and informative. Are there any Nangreaves still living in the area? If so could you please forward my e-mail address to them as I would love to learn more about our name? Keep up the great work. Sincerely, Jim Nangreaves

Bonfire Night (November 2002)
The weather was kind to us this year and a pleasant evening was had by all with a magnificent bonfire and a display of fireworks. Special thanks to Dave Smith for all his hard work in transporting a lot of wood down to the site of the bonfire and to Lee Ingrouille for setting off the fireworks.

Christmas Menus (November 2002)
The menus have now been distributed for this year's Christmas Meal and a special thanks must go to Caitlin and Elinor Cooper for their production of a very festive and professional looking leaflet. Tim will be providing the disco and there will be plenty of prizes for the raffle.

Sad News (November 2002)
Sad news recently for anyone who knew Jean Pilling of 23 Mount Pleasant. Jean died suddenly on 14th November at Turf Cote residential home in Helmshore. She played a major role in village life during the 1970s and 80s, and was a founder member (and later chairperson) of the Nangreaves Residents Association for a good many years.

Our thoughts go out to her family and anyone who knew her at this sad time.

Village Funds (October (2002)
We are once again appealing for ideas for projects on which to spend the village funds. Ideas so far suggested are a new village map, village barbecues and village tables and chairs.

It has also been suggested that we buy a lock-up of some sort (e.g. a strong shed) so that we could store such items and loan them out to village residents for a small sum to cover the eventual cost of their replacement.

If you have any other ideas, or could suggest a secure area on which to put such a village store, please contact any village committee member. Also, if you object to any of the above suggestions then please say so and let us know why.

Walmersley Old Road (September 2002)
(Or Old Road, Walmersley as we are told it should be called). We are still attempting to make progress with the council over repair work to the 'main road'.

We have been speaking with our MP, David Chaytor, and have made contact with a group at Holcombe who have recently experienced similar problems with a cobbled road in their area. This should prove a very useful source of advice.

We will keep you informed of any developments.

Bogus workmen (September 2002)
We are still receiving reports of bogus workmen touring the area so please keep alert.

Residents' requests (September 2002)
We have received one specific request and one general plea concerning dog fouling in the area.

One householder who owns a garage at the bottom village car park is suffering from a dog or dogs fouling on their private parking/garage area and have asked if dog owners could please be alert and not allow their dog to foul in this area.

The other more general request concerns the road beyond the Lord Raglan car park. The grass verges along this road are becoming very heavily soiled with dog faeces to such an extent that it is impossible to walk along the grass in some areas. Please remember that it is your responsibility to clear up after your dog and just because it fouls along an open stretch of road does not mean that you do not have to clean up. This road is used by walkers, families, local villagers and many groups and it is unfair to spoil the area for others.

Social events (September 2002)
We were hoping to hold a rounders match and picnic this month but the sudden appearance of autumn and lack of time to organise the event has caused us to cancel it. Instead we are hoping to hold a May Day event next year with Maypole dancing and a mini sports day. If you have any ideas for events that you would like to see organised please let us know.
